How much is ENOUGH?

At one of the Stewardship team meetings I attended recently, Pastor Steve led us in a devotion on giving and how the Bible (in 2nd Corinthians, chapter 9) tells us that God will be sure we have ENOUGH. We talked about how He doesn’t guarantee EXTRA or EXCESS (which is what our culture encourages us to strive for if we look at our culture honestly!), but he does say we will have ENOUGH. We happened to be talking about money and giving, but the idea of “enough” has come up on my heart in many different ways over the past several weeks: Will I have enough time and energy to do all the things I’ve said I would do? Am I living my life in a “Christ-like-enough” way that people will see God through me? I want to give back to God through my money, but what is enough to repay what he has done for me?! Will Trinity have enough teachers, volunteers and money to fulfill all of the ministry needs we have and will have in the future? Are we doing enough as a church to spread God’s love beyond ourselves?
It goes on and on… I don’t know the answers to all of those questions, but I’ve noticed a subtle change in my prayers and in my desires. I’ve been trying to ask God just to let it be enough – that I would have enough
energy to do the things he’s calling me to. That I would have enough patience to be a good teacher today. That there would be enough money to pay the bills and so on. I’ve honestly felt a subtle change in my worry level. When I recall the passage and say, “God let it be enough”, I’m not always going for more, more, more. Striving for extra creates great stress and pressure – whether you are striving for extra money, extra time and talents, extra energy – when you are going for extra, it‘s never enough!

My prayer for you this month is that first, you will know that YOU are enough for God – he created you, He sent his Son to die for you and He loves you just as you are! Secondly, I pray for us all that we relieve ourselves of the pressures of striving for the extras, and we follow God’s guidance – through giving of ourselves and our assets and talents – He will see that we ARE enough and that we HAVE enough! And that’s probably more than enough from me!
