The Golden Compass – Caution Parents!

Your church staff thought you might want to know about a movie that is coming to theaters on December 7th. It is called The Golden Compass starring Nicole Kidman. The movie is based on a book entitled Northern Lights, which is one of a trilogy of books in a series called “His Dark Materials” written by Phillip Pullman. Mr. Pullman describes himself as being agnostic, but readily admits that his books are about killing God. He even says that he wants to reach everyone with his message and that he figured the best way to do that is by writing for children. This movie, and the others that are sure to follow, are described as being anti-Narnia, and they culminate with killing God. With Nicole Kidman starring it is sure to get lots of publicity. Check out www.snopes.com or www.pluggedinonline.com for further reviews and information. I haven’t seen it, and obviously can’t give you a personal review, but it sounded like it was worth passing along the description so you can make an informed choice about whether or not to take your kids.

If you have other good parenting resources, or would like to get together with other parents to talk about books, media, video games or other parenting issues, please let me know. It can be a “rough road” out there for parents and we can navigate better with the help of prayer and other parents!

One of the reviews calls this movie and its presumed sequels “Atheism for Kids.” If you follow Sue’s “pluggedin.com” look, you can read the quote. The marketing folks are trying to reign Bill Pullman in so that Cristians won’t stay home (and so they can make the second and third movies, which are much more blatently anti-Christian), but you should know where he’s coming from.
